How We Practice Solutions Journalism

One of the main types of journalism that Overstory practices is called solutions journalism. These types of stories go beyond identifying challenges to explore how people and communities are responding to Hawaiʻi’s most pressing issues.

Our solutions reporting follows four key principles:

1. Response and context
We investigate ways that people, organizations and communities are addressing challenges impacting Hawai‘i. Our goal is to always begin with and center Hawai‘i-based efforts, though we may also look at initiatives in other jurisdictions that have local interest. We look at what’s working, what isn’t and why.

2. Evidence-based
We ground our reporting in evidence, using data and case studies to evaluate effectiveness. We’re transparent when approaches are new or evidence is limited. Our goal is to give readers a clear understanding of what we know and what we’re still learning.

3. Actionable insights
We distill practical lessons that others can learn from and potentially adapt. By exploring how solutions work in detail, we help readers understand what it might take to create similar positive change in their own communities.

4. Honesty about limitations
Systemic issues often require multiple attempts at responses and solutions. We examine the limitations, trade-offs and challenges of each response we cover. This balanced approach helps readers understand what might work in their context and what adaptations might be needed.

Example: Instead of focusing our reporting on the problems that Hawaiʻi’s housing crisis causes, we might explore how one community successfully increased affordable housing through policy changes. We’d document their approach and results, share lessons learned and discuss ongoing challenges.

This solutions-focused approach aims to leave readers better equipped to engage with issues that matter to them and their communities—and give them hope. While we don’t advocate for particular solutions, we believe that understanding what’s working or what’s possible can inspire local action and innovation.
